Prediction markets explained: Kalshi, Polymarket and sports
What they are, how they differ from sports betting and how to read the probability to make better informed decisions. The final decision is always yours.
What is a prediction market?
A prediction market is a platform where “contracts” on the outcome of an event (a game, an election) are bought and sold. The contract price reflects the probability estimated by the market. If a “Team A wins” contract costs 60 cents, the market assigns it ~60% probability.
Betting vs prediction markets
| Aspect | Sports bet | Prediction market |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the price | The bookmaker (with margin/vig) | The market (supply and demand) |
| What the price reflects | Odds with margin included | Probability ~directly |
| Examples | DraftKings, bet365, Caliente | Kalshi (CFTC-regulated), Polymarket |

Kalshi in brief
Kalshi is an events market regulated in the US by the CFTC. In sports it has grown very fast and offers contracts on outcomes and combinations. It is a market, not a source of “picks”: it pays to understand what each probability means before acting.
Polymarket in brief
Polymarket is a crypto-based prediction market with coverage of several sports. Like Kalshi, its price is a reading of the market’s probability, not a guarantee.
